The World of Cherry Review

The World of Cherry Book 1 by Kay Brandt

The World of Cherry is based on the 2011 lesbian adult film called Cherry and its sequel Cherry 2 by writer/director Kay Brandt, who specializes in lesbian erotica and has worked for many adult companies such as Digital Playground, Girlfriends Films, Filly Films, New Sensations and currently Adam and Eve. Cherry 1 and 2 are the biggest budget All girl movies and STILL some of the top movies today. Despite a desire for more, a third one was sadly never made. The climate for a big budget lesbian adult film simply isn't there since their more mainstream All sex (boy/girl) counterparts do sooo much better. Some companies even refuse to make them, simply as a pure business decision.

In comes The World of Cherry, a late 2014 e-book novelization of the 2011 hit. It expands on, and adds to the film. For example, The lead and title character,Cherry, doesn't engage in sex in the films but sure as hell does in the books. She seems to come off differently because of it. There is also an incident exclusive to the book. How that one plays out will have to be seen in the next book.

The World of Cherry follows Cherish, or Cherry, with her 'underground' lesbian club, exclusive to only the wealthiest of female clients, and her clients and employees. We see her run the club and how she deals with her live-in situation where she chooses one girl out of two she has had in her house, something she never did before. We see a new hire see and her friend deal with being in a high exclusive establishment like this. There is a a mother who brings in her virgin, freshly 18-year old step-daughter to usher her into womanhood, "the right way", as well as a pair of longtime friends celebrate their friends birthday in the club by having her give into the flesh of another woman.

You see, while the club is a strip club, it offers other perks to it's members. they can, if they choose, book some exclusive time with one of the workers. Part of the reason the club is so elusive and why it's location is constantly changing is because of the sexual activity the club offers. Despite offering only women, a lot of the clientele seem to be married 'straight' women.

As a whole the story is well written. While there isn't much in character development (I'm sure there will be some more in the following books), you do get a lot of backstory to some of these character. From Eternity, the lead worker how handles the other ladies on the floor and Cherry's first and longest live-in, to Dusty, Cherry's right hand who helps her on the security end of things among other things, to Veronica a high tier client who never downgraded. While Cherry's backstory remains mostly a mystery, you do get bits and pieces. It mostly comes in the form a mysterious woman form her past. This is one of the reasons I wanted a third film, to see what happened with these two and why she affects Cherry the way she does. We do get a bit more on that here and I'm sure this will be followed up. This dynamic of hers is great for Cherry because it is a stark contrast to how she otherwise appears in the story, a lustful lady who takes who she wants and is in constant control of everything.

Despite this, it isn't perfect. For one, it can get a bit hard to read at times. Some paragraphs run a bit too long and into each other, Where two, or more, paragraphs aren't separated. This becomes a bigger problem when involving dialogue. The rule is when a new person is talking, a new paragraph is introduced. It creates a situation where you are reading someones words thinking it is someone else. As someone who takes in big chunks of text at a time when reading, it becomes a huge problem.

Chapters will occasionally change perspective and POV. There are a few characters who get written in a first person perspective while other chapters get written in third person. Generally, I do not like it when stories change like that. Different characters getting first person view, I could handle but the switch from first to third I never got. For this story, when I got to the chapter introducing the two long-time friends, Kathrine and Avery, I thought "Oh okay. I see what happening here." It  was  the second chapter that was in third person where the previous ones were In Cherry's. I figured only hers would be in first and the others in third. I would have liked that, the tile character getting the more intimate perspective. But it wasn't the case. Both Dusty and Eternity get that treatment also.

Perhaps the most interesting and shocking think to note about the wring thing is the lack of description. I was never into people over describing things in their writing. I never needed to know about the dust growing in the corner of the room or where the material a characters clothes came from. I do need to know what the characters look like what the place the characters are in looks like.  I want to have a clear picture of the basics and fill in the rest myself. Some characters get this treatment. The young virgin stepdaughter is described as a petite redhead, one dancer is said to have Latin hips, a client has 'Italian features' and the DJ is a butch Asian. But its isn't enough. They are vague and leave a lot to be desired. I watched the films so I have the actresses still in mind when reading so it does help out a bit. Locations are just the same. We do get some in Cherry's bathroom but the rest of the house is mostly left to the reader.

Despite this though the rest of the story is good. Perhaps it is the nostalgia from the films though. I will admit I did get excited when I heard about this book series and immediately went to search it out. The sex scenes are also great and well descriptive (although I do wish the mention of males were toned down a bit). There is little 'plot' here where there is a beginning and end but is seems far from simply  'stroke' material (But what do I know?). Having read a bit of the second book already, it does pick up the next day from where this one ended. This reads more like an episode on premium television than, say, a movie.

As of now, there are three books available with a forth looking at a December release and more to come soon after. I can see this series conclude by the end of next year but Kay is a busy woman right now trying to get certain projects off the ground (inside pun if you know what she's currently working on.)

You can buy The World of Cherry series as well her other books like her newest one Safe Landings (soon to be a feature adult film)in many places such as iTunes, Kindle, Android Play Store, and from the Publisher's Website http://www.eXcessica.com/books/.
